Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee Support
GHS’ physicians and pharmacists provide state Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics (P&T) Committees with policy advice, clinical analysis, and financial reporting. In reviewing all new medications as they come on the market, we help states determine whether a medication should be include on a Preferred Drug List (PDL).
Our Therapeutic Drug Class Reviews compare the safety and efficacy of drugs within targeted therapy classes. And, in evaluating drugs under consideration for inclusion on a Preferred Drug List (PDL), we refer to meticulously designed studies to uncover all clinically significant positive and negative drug attributes that could potentially affect health outcomes.
In working with P&T Committees, we share our belief that a PDL provides a selection of preferred drugs that allows primary care physicians to care for the majority of their patients while, at the same time, minimizing Prior Authorization (PA) requests. The driving force for or against recommending PDL placement is a drug’s unique clinical contribution. Each state’s P&T Committee must rely primarily on evidence-based guidelines, rather than clinical experience, expert opinions, professional relationships, pathophysiology, community standards, publications, or other sources, to determine the value of this contribution.
